BLOG 4 Correspondent Styles for a Millennial Generation

In today’s world, many authors find it difficult to connect to the younger generation for a number of reasons. The younger generation that consists of 18-30 year olds were raised on slightly different thoughts, beliefs and morals than their older and younger generations.

In Pico Iyer’s story called “Why We Travel,” I believe it connects to the younger generation because it has a deep meaning. The first sentence states, “We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves.” This deep meaning brings the younger generation into the story because the younger generation believes they will find purpose if they continue to read on.

I personally found myself intrigued into reading more into this story because of the deeper meaning (You can find my reaction/response to this deeper meaning in my BLOG POST 1).

In such a crucial time in a young adults life, he/she is consistently looking for the right answer. By continuing to read on, the reader hopes to find part of that answer, if not the whole answer.

Foreign correspondents have a duty of relaying messages and stories to the younger generation. These correspondents hear numerous amount of stories that are filled with knowledge, wisdom and beneficial facts that can help the younger generation. By passing on these stories, I believe the correspondents can help the younger generation find their “purpose.”

I believe correspondents tailoring their messages to a specific meaning or having a story that has a beneficial message is what the younger generation is looking for. Younger generations are known for being curious and knowledge/fact seekers, and having correspondents tailor their stories around that aspect is beneficial.

An article titled, The Millennials: Confident. Connected. Open to Change, from The Pew Research Center states, “The American teens and twenty-somethings currently making the passage into adulthood-have begun to forge theirs: confident, self-expressive, liberal, upbeat and receptive to new ideas and ways of living.” This article helps show that the younger generation is looking for a more meaningful way of life… a deeper “purpose.”

Knowing that the younger generation is expressing more interest in tackling more challenging life situations and tougher experiences, shows that they need guidance from these correspondents.

That is where the foreign correspondents come in… to help guide, mentor, and share beneficial knowledge to the younger generation so they are able to tackle their future with confidence and determination.

Recently, my classmates and I took a field trip to the Uffizi museum located in Florence, Italy. It was an amazing experience and the beautiful artwork left me speechless.

Unfortunately, the Uffizi is not on all of the younger generations bucket list… but it should be! it was BEAUTIFUL!

One travel story idea for the younger generation about the Uffizi today to get them to attend the museum is that it can help them find their “purpose”.

Knowing that the Uffizi is full of centuries and centuries of rich history, and it is all in reach, is an empowering feeling. Becoming knowledgable about such history can give the younger generation an upper hand.

Yes, I know, the thought of learning about some old painting might not be the most exciting thing in the world… but it could give someone that bit of an edge that a future employer, boss or co-worker is looking for. Either way, no piece of knowledge is useless. By doing something as simple as walking through the Uffizi and gaining some knowledge, can help someone move one step forward toward their purpose.
